Billing

WorldPlane bills each organisation monthly through Stripe: the Studio plan, plus the server time its zones use, by the minute.

Server time#

Every running process of a zone counts: each server, warm servers included, and the gateway. It is billed by the minute. Servers count at the environment's server size; the gateway always runs, and counts, as one standard process:

SizevCPUMemoryPriceCounts as
standard (default)12 GiB$0.20 an hour1 server-minute a minute
plus24 GiB$0.40 an hour2
max48 GiB$0.80 an hour4
  • A zone with 3 standard servers and its gateway running for an hour is 4 standard server-hours, $0.80.
  • A zone with 2 max servers and its gateway running for an hour is 2 × 4 + 1 = 9 standard server-hours, $1.80.
  • A running zone counts at the size it was deployed with; a size change takes effect, and is billed, from the next deploy.
  • The earlier names large and xlarge are still accepted for plus and max.
  • The invoice shows server time as server-minutes on WorldPlane's meter, each finished hour reported once.
  • Nothing is billed while a zone is stopped or sleeping. Its builds and settings stay.

Subscribing#

  1. In the panel, an owner or billing member opens the organisation's Billing & usage (or the overview's plan card) and chooses Subscribe at Stripe.

  2. Stripe Checkout asks for a payment method and a billing address, and accepts a business tax ID and promotion codes. It subscribes the organisation to the Studio plan and to server time together, so both are on the same monthly invoice.

  3. Stripe returns you to the panel. The subscription is active as soon as Stripe confirms it.

Signing up, organisations, members, projects and environments need no subscription, so you can set up first. Uploading a build, deploying and waking a sleeping zone need an active one (Stripe status active or trialing; past_due keeps working while Stripe retries the payment).

Invoices, payment and cancelling#

Invoices & payment at Stripe in Billing & usage opens Stripe's customer portal: the payment method, invoices, billing details and tax ID, and cancelling at the end of the period. When a subscription ends, the organisation's running zones stop; its builds and settings stay, for when it subscribes again.

Keeping the bill where you want it#

ControlWhereWhat it does
BudgetEach environment (max_per_hour, --budget)The most the zone may spend, USD an hour. The autoscaler never runs more servers than the budget pays for.
Most serversEach environment (max_servers)A hard cap on servers at once.
Warm serversEach environment (warm_servers, default 1)0 runs no idle spare: cheapest, but a split waits for a server to boot.
SleepEach environment (sleep_after_minutes)A zone with no players for that long stops and isn't metered until the wake endpoint starts it.
Spend limitThe organisation (Billing & usage, PUT .../spend-limit)Once this month's spend reaches it, new deploys are refused. Running zones keep running, each capped by its budget.

The month is the calendar month in UTC. Usage, budgets and the spend limit use the same list prices as the invoice.

When the API answers 402#

402 Payment Required means one of:

  • No active subscription, on uploading a build, deploying, or waking a sleeping zone: subscribe in the panel.
  • Deploys on hold for an unpaid invoice: a failed payment holds the organisation's deploys until the invoice is paid; running zones keep running. Update the payment method at Stripe.
  • The spend limit is reached, on deploying: raise or remove it in Billing & usage.

Each answer's error says which. See the API's errors.

Tax and currency#

Checkout collects your billing address and, optionally, a business tax ID, kept on your Stripe customer for invoices. WorldPlane charges no sales tax at present. Prices and invoices are in US dollars.
